Since April 2023, Sudan has been locked in a devastating power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). What began as a contest for military dominance has evolved into a nationwide humanitarian catastrophe. Hospitals, meant to be sanctuaries of healing, have turned into battlegrounds. Civilians, including children, the elderly, and the injured, have become victims of bombings, raids, and the occupation of medical facilities.

This war has not only displaced millions but also systematically destroyed the very systems designed to save lives, violating international humanitarian law and basic human rights. Urgent global attention and action are needed to heal Sudan and restore hope.

The Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

The crisis in Sudan is among the worst humanitarian emergencies in the world. According to the UN and WHO, over 8 million people have been displaced, and more than 10,000 lives have been lost. Hospitals in Khartoum, Darfur, and Al-Jazira have been bombed, looted, and occupied, leaving millions without access to healthcare.

Key statistics:

Millions Displaced: Over 8 million forced to flee, either internally or as refugees.

Food Insecurity: Millions facing severe hunger and malnutrition.

Healthcare Collapse: Hospitals destroyed, staff killed or forced to flee.

Basic Needs Unmet: Clean water and shelter are scarce.

As per WHO reports, dozens of hospitals have been attacked deliberately. Medical supplies are blocked, ambulances targeted, and healthcare workers detained or killed. This has exacerbated the spread of disease, increased maternal and child mortality, and intensified overall suffering.

Personal stories shared by humanitarian workers tell of doctors performing surgeries without anesthesia and mothers delivering babies in makeshift tents. Such testimonies reveal the brutal human cost of this war.

Who Are the Warring Sides?

The conflict primarily involves the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF):

Claim to defend national institutions and prevent Sudan’s fragmentation.

Accuse RSF of hiding among civilians and using hospitals as shields.

Have been involved in indiscriminate bombings and heavy shelling in civilian areas.

Rapid Support Forces (RSF):

Claim they are fighting for democracy and civilian rule.

Widely accused of serious human rights violations, including looting, sexual violence, and occupying civilian areas, including hospitals.

Use civilian infrastructures strategically, worsening the humanitarian toll.

Civilians and Humanitarian Groups:

Demand a permanent ceasefire, safe humanitarian corridors, and international pressure to end the destruction of medical infrastructure.

Over 10,000 people have been killed so far, and humanitarian organizations continue to call for immediate peace.

How War Is Undermining Sudan’s Future

The conflict's effects go far beyond immediate violence:

Healthcare: Systematic destruction has pushed Sudan’s healthcare system to the brink of collapse. Routine services, vaccinations, and emergency care have all but disappeared.

Education: Schools have closed, and millions of children have been denied education, pushing an entire generation into uncertainty.

Economy: Businesses destroyed, jobs lost, agricultural fields abandoned, and inflation soaring. Hunger and poverty are widespread.

Youth and Social Fabric: Young people, who are Sudan’s hope, are either forced into fighting or migration, or left with no opportunities. Communities are divided, traumatized, and destabilized.

Regional Instability: The massive refugee flow is impacting neighboring countries, threatening wider regional security.

If this war continues, Sudan risks losing its future generations to violence, poverty, and despair. The long-term human, economic, and social costs will take decades to heal.

What Peace Could Look Like

Ending the war in Sudan requires a multi-pronged approach:

Ceasefire Agreements: Immediate, verifiable, and enforced ceasefires to halt violence.

Inclusive Dialogue: All stakeholders, including marginalized groups and civil society, must be involved to ensure that peace reflects the will of the people.

Political and Structural Reforms: Addressing root causes such as political exclusion, economic inequalities, and power imbalances.

Accountability: Holding all perpetrators of war crimes, especially those attacking hospitals, accountable through international mechanisms.

Strengthening Healthcare: Rebuilding and securing hospitals and clinics, ensuring supply chains for essential medicines, and supporting healthcare workers through training and mental health services.

Transitional Justice and Reconciliation: Establishing frameworks for truth-telling, reparations, and reconciliation to heal the social fabric.

A peaceful Sudan is possible only through justice, inclusivity, and international solidarity.

How People Can Help Now

While the situation is dire, there are concrete ways the international community and individuals can help:

Support Humanitarian Organizations: Donate to trusted organizations providing food, medical aid, and shelter.

Raise Awareness: Share information, write to media outlets, and keep Sudan’s crisis visible on global platforms.

Advocate for Policy Change: Pressure governments to support peace talks, enforce sanctions on those violating humanitarian law, and provide humanitarian funding.

Empower Local Voices: Amplify the stories and demands of Sudanese civil society, women, and youth leaders.
